By 2030, Gen Z will make up more than a quarter of the U.S. workforce. Employers who invest early in Gen Z talent will gain a competitive edge in building loyal, skilled and innovative teams. Up Next Nevada engages these young adults, ages 18 to 24 years old, to work at Boys & Girls Clubs across the state.
This isn’t just any job – it’s a first step toward a meaningful career, where staff receive mentorship, college and trade school tuition assistance, and find a career pathway. Launched in partnership with the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation in 2025, the initiative empowers staff to dream, plan and grow into a best-fit career in education, healthcare or energy.
Tweens and teens are most vulnerable to substance misuse, peer pressure and bullying during the transitions from elementary to middle school and middle to high school. During these times, high-risk behaviors result in an increase of academic challenges including absenteeism, juvenile crime, pregnancy and depression.
With support from the Fund for Resilient Nevada, established by state opioid class action lawsuit settlements, Clubs focus on building resiliency in this highly-impressionable age group utilizing the SMART Moves curricula. Clubs coach youth in developing self-awareness and communication skills to address real-world problems in a manner that is youth-led, adult-facilitated, project-based and active.
Boys & Girls Clubs is rapidly expanding child care access for Nevada’s working families. Championed by Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo and the Interim Finance Committee in 2024, this initiative expedites construction of 14 new child care centers, serving 1,000 more families.
The locations of the new centers were selected in areas of emerging industrial development, surging populations and/or few child care options; the funding will support Boys & Girls Clubs’ capital projects in Carson City, Dayton, Elko, Ely, Eureka, Incline Village, Las Vegas, Laughlin, Minden, Reno, Spring Creek and Winnemucca. Existing and new licensed sites operate at the highest performance standards for early literacy and childhood development, with many achieving accreditation as Nevada Ready! Pre-K sites.
